Ocean Plastics: Research and Action
Ocean Plastics: Research and Action explores the growing impact of plastic pollution and microplastics in our rivers and oceans through current research undertaken at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Working alongside curator Emma Freeman and the Royal Holloway University Su Koh Design developed the 3D interactive exhibits that communicate complex scientific research through hands-on interactive exhibits that make current scientific research accessible to a broad audience. The displays encourage visitors to discover how plastics are present in everyday products and to examine microplastic samples collected from local rivers.
The exhibition combines clear interpretation with simple, robust interactive elements to make scientific research accessible to a broad audience.
The Microplastics in Rivers exhibit presents samples collected from the River Brent and Medway Estuary beneath illuminated viewing lenses, allowing visitors to compare the different particles found at each location. Sliding magnifiers encourage close observation and reinforce the research process.
The Hidden Everyday Plastics display invites visitors to lift panels and discover the surprising range of products containing plastic, encouraging exploration through physical interaction.
To support the exhibition's environmental message, the display fascias were fabricated using Le Pavé recycled plastic panels supplied by Surface Matter. Incorporating recycled materials directly into the exhibition design allows the displays themselves to become part of the sustainability story.
The result is a compact exhibition that transforms academic research into an engaging visitor experience, encouraging audiences to consider the hidden impact of plastics in everyday life.
